Dry January suggests taking the month off to be sober. This campaign officially launched in 2013 was organized by Alcohol Change UK.  But the practice goes back as far as 1942.

During this period Finland had their “Sober January” to support the war against the Soviet Union. The Dry January term is now trade marked by Alcohol Change UK/Alcohol Research UK. Alcohol Change UK is a charity which aims on reducing the harm due to alcohol in society.

On their website in 2023 about 175,000 people signed up to be a part of Dry January. That very year, 15% of US adults, which amounts to over 260 million Americans, took the pledge.

Dry January is more than a trend or “detoxing” your body. No matter what your alcohol intake maybe it’s beneficial to review your relationship regarding alcohol. And after a month or two of holiday gatherings many people now choose to join the dry January group to cut back on drinking or reset.

Alcohol Consumption Rising?

Further, the campaign has grown during a time of alcohol consumption rising. One study shows that drinking went up 70% from 1990-2017.

According to the World Health Organization no amount of alcohol consumption is a good thing.

And the CDC states excessive drinking has become a leading cause of preventable death in the US. During the first year of the pandemic alcohol sales went up as more people drank more than usual.
